Renovated emergency shelter reopens in Burlington

After a year of renovations and program development, the Champlain Place Emergency Shelter opened its doors again on May 22. ?Champlain Place sits on Shelburne Road and is the third shelter project that the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, CVOEO, and the Champlain Housing Trust have worked on together.? This partnership saw updates to rooms and the building, while also providing more programming opportunities. These building renovations include new plumbing and heating systems, flooring and repairs, and an outdoor courtyard for residents.

Survivor shares how Voices Against Violence helped her heal; 'In Their Shoes' event to raise awareness

After surviving a turbulent relationship, Khayli is finding peace – and herself – at Voices Against Violence’s newest domestic violence shelter. Through workshops and communal living, Khayli is receiving the support she needs to grow and heal from both a substance use addiction and an abusive boyfriend. Community members can walk in the shoes of Khayli and others experiencing hardships Saturday, May 24 during “In Their Shoes,” a fundraiser for CVOEO programs.

Join the 'In Their Shoes' walk to raise awareness about homelessness and support community services

In recent years, our country has experienced a significant rise in homelessness, with Vermont experiencing a 300% increase in homelessness over the last five years. The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), which includes Franklin & Grand Isle Community Action, Samaritan House and Voices Against Violence, has been actively supporting a growing number of individuals and families. The homelessness crisis has been exacerbated by the shortage of safe and affordable housing and rising inflation.

Just Launched: Vermont Medicaid Permanent Supportive Housing Assistance Program (PSHA)

Vermont has begun using Medicaid to bolster housing navigation and housing sustaining services to eligible individuals. The Department for Children and Families’ (DCF) Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) will be managing this project by partnering with five housing services agencies to provide assistance for 100 Vermonters experiencing chronic homelessness who have associated health and social needs.

Mobile home park goes without water for a week after leak

A Hinesburg mobile home park went without running water for a week earlier this month while its management company tried to fix a leak in one of the park’s water pipes. Sunset Lake, off Richmond Road, is a resident-owned cooperative with 55 individual homes. Residents there collectively own the park and govern themselves through a co-op board. The board also contracts with Majestic Property Management to run day-to-day operations. While Sunset Lake is connected to the town water supply, the co-op owns and is responsible for the pipes on their own property.

DOGE Cuts Will Hobble Defenses Against Housing Discrimination

The Trump administration's slash-and-burn campaign against "wokeness" and government spending is coming for the few services that work to curtail discrimination in Vermont's housing market. Late last month, the first swing of the ax struck a grant that funds a program at the CVOEO, which supports renters, homebuyers and landlords on issues related to state and federal fair housing laws.

Federal gov't cutting 80% of funding to VT's only fair housing project: Here's the impact

Vermont's only statewide program dedicated to non-discriminatory and affordable housing is losing 80% of its federal funding. The Champlain Valley Office for Economic Opportunity's Fair Housing Project is granted annual funding from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. According to the cancellation letter sent to CVOEO, “HUD is terminating this award because it no longer effectuates the program goals or agency priorities.”
