Vermont's Kid Governor is hosting a cereal drive this week to support area food shelves.

Kid Governor Roslyn Fortin, a fifth-grader at Highgate Elementary School, launched the drive on Monday. The event continues this Saturday, April 18, with a special collection at Mother Hubbard's Deli & Country Store.

Drop off unopened, non-expired boxes of cereal between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Fortin was inaugurated as Vermont's first Kid Governor back in January after winning a statewide election. Her platform focuses on supporting unhoused Vermonters because everyone deserves a safe place to live, she said.

"A lot of people who don't have homes also don't have food," Fortin said. "I wanted to host a food drive to help them, and we learned that cereal was a really popular item at food banks. So, we decided to host a Cereal Drive at our school and in our community. I want to help people in any way I can."

Collected cereal will be donated to Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, which manages several food shelves in the region, including NorthWest Family Foods in St. Albans.

Can't make it on Saturday? Donations are also accepted today and Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Highgate Elementary School and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Highgate Arena.
