St. Albans, VT– Vermonters are recognizing Homelessness Awareness Day this Thursday. The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity held a vigil in Taylor Park to show support for the unhoused.

The organization put 462 colored flags in the snowy ground to represent those who are or were homeless in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties in the last year. 114 green flags represented homeless children, 14 orange flags for veterans, 18 blue flags for elderly people, and 316 red flags for adults.

Officials chose to hold the vigil outdoors in the snow to bring awareness to the fact that people without a home have to spend time in the cold during the winter months.
