Burlington will open cold weather shelter this week

Burlington authorities announced that a refuge for extreme cold weather will open Christmas evening for the first time this year.

The shelter, at the Miller Center at 30 Gosse Court, will be open starting 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Day until 8:00 a.m. on Friday, due to wind chill temperatures forecast to fall below -10 Fahrenheit overnight.

Free transportation will be provided from the Fletcher Free Library and the COTS Daystation at 95 North Avenue to the shelter starting around 4:30 p.m.

Pets will be allowed in the shelter, say officials, but not children under 18. No pre-registration is necessary.

The shelter is part of a partnership between the City of Burlington and CVOEO.
