Burlington to open extreme cold shelter on New Year's Day

The City of Burlington is opening an extreme cold weather shelter on New Year's Day as temperatures are expected to be dangerously frigid.

The shelter will be located at the Miller Center at 130 Gosse Court and will be run in partnership with the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, according to Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak's office.

The center will be open Thursday, Jan. 1 from 5 p.m. to Friday, Jan. 2 at 8 a.m.

Evening temperatures are expected to be below zero with wind chill factor, according to the National Weather Service.

The shelter is low barrier, and pets are allowed.Current estimates from city officials show that more than 200 people could utilize the shelter. Additional shelters could be opened if the need is great, the release said.

Transportation will be provided to the Miller Center from the Fletcher Free Library and from the COTS Daystation on 95 North Ave., city officials said.
