Burlington opened an emergency shelter Sunday evening through Monday morning amid dangerously cold temperatures.

The shelter at the Miller Center on Gosse Court in the city’s New North End is a low-barrier, pet-friendly facility that can host 100 people.

The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity can open the shelter when the “feels like” temperature reaches negative 10 degrees.

“Staying out in this type of cold is just not possible. We have elder Vermonters, lots of people with really high needs, so it’s really critical that we keep our shelters open as much as possible,” said Paul Dragon, executive director of CVOEO.

This is the third time the emergency shelter has opened this year.
