Sample Letter Templates
These letters are templates for you to edit and make your own. You can use them as they are, but please read carefully to ensure they apply to your situation. As always, please call our free Tenants Hotline with any questions (802-864-0099), and remember to keep a copy of any letter that you send to your landlord.

  • Landlord Access - Use this letter to remind your landlord of your rights regarding a landlord's access to a unit, which you can read about in our Information for Renters area
  • Major Code Violations (Major Repairs) - Send this letter for emergencies, such as when something in your unit violates Vermont health code
  • Repair and Deduct (Minor Repairs) - You can use this letter to notify your landlord of a smaller repair that is needed, and to let them know that if the problem is not fixed within 30 days you will have the option to fix it yourself and deduct your expenses from your rent. Please call our free Tenants Hotline before deducting anything from your rent.
  • Rent Increases - Use this letter to remind your landlord of the proper notice period for rent increases in Vermont, not including Burlington.
  • Rent Increases (Burlington) - Use this letter to remind your landlord of the proper notice period for rent increases in Burlington, Vermont.
  • Late Fees - Send this letter as a reminder to your landlord that late fees are illegal except to cover actual proven expenses caused by the late payment.
  • Security Deposits - You can send this letter after you move out to request your security deposit back
