VTI was established in 1981 as a program of CVOEO.
VTI's office is located at 294 North Winooski Avenue in Burlington, Vermont. VTI serves the tenants of Vermont through a variety of activities and services including the following:
VTI is staffed to provide free direct services (rental issues counseling, advocacy and referrals) to Vermont's residential tenants.
VTI conducts workshops on residential rental housing laws, codes and code enforcement, fair housing laws, etc. Our workshops are custom designed to meet the particular needs of participating groups. VTI has provided training for a large variety of groups and organizations such as: l Groups of Tenants and Tenant Organizations l Colleges l Social Service Organizations l ESL Classes l Law Enforcement Professionals
VTI produces, publishes and distributes the widely used handbook, "Renting in Vermont, Handbook " . This handbook provides a comprehensive summary of Vermont's Landlord-Tenant laws. This material is presented in a straight forward and easy to understand style that is friendly and accessible to most users.
VTI provides expert testimony for public policy makers regarding a variety of housing issues. VTI encourages implementation and maintenance of public policies that increase the quantity, quality, safety, and affordability of housing and that increase security of tenure in housing. We endorse policies that ensure fair and equal access to housing.
