Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf is the largest food shelf in Vermont and serves over 10,000 people a year. Started in 1974, the Food Shelf was initially one small room staffed by one person and assisted by volunteers, who distributed a three-day supply of groceries to families once a month. Today, CEFS operates four programs:
Hot Meals
Grocery Distribution
Homebound Grocery Delivery
Project Angel Food, which is a prepared and perishable food rescue program that delivers the rescued
food to other local organizations that feed people.
In addition, the UVM Food Salvage Program uses CEFS facilities to prepare and serve a Sunday evening meal.
CEFS is a United Way agency and a Network Partner of the Vermont Foodbank.
